Finland’s oldest city will be filled with locals and friends of Turku celebrating with events and festivities on Turku Day or Turun Päivä, Sunday, September 21. The day’s program includes more than one hundred events, ranging from beloved classics to brand new experiences.

This year, Turku Day brings people together under the theme "Delightfully Moving Turku." In addition to the City of Turku, numerous local associations, companies, and clubs are organizing a wide variety of activities. Visitors can try out sports through local clubs, enjoy art, and experience the lively atmosphere of markets at the Old Great Square and Market Square.

Celebrations will already begin on Saturday, September 20, with the Turku Day pre-party at Gatorade Center, where TPS faces KalPa in an ice hockey match. Alongside the game, the public can explore Turku’s diverse sports and hobby opportunities. The evening will culminate with a performance by Turku-born pop star Robin Packalen.

The theme of movement is strongly reflected in the wide range of sports activities on offer. Many gyms will hold open doors in honor of Turku Day. The Turku Day Dance Bash at Loiste will feature trial classes and performances in the new facilities. Yoga lovers can join a Yin yoga session accompanied by live violin music at Joogastudio 8. Other options include CrossFit, frisbee golf, water aerobics, Taekwondo, and carnival samba.

Children and families can enjoy Family Day at Kupittaa Sports Hall, with opportunities to try out track and field events, or attend the popular InterAction sports event. Turun Suunnistajat offers family orienteering in the city environment. At the Main Library Studio, children can join a storyteller’s journey and even spot trolls in the library yard. At Blomberg Square, the popular Big Machines event returns for the third time, showcasing vehicles used in the maintenance of Turku’s streets and parks.

Arts and Culture to Move the Audience

In addition to sports, Turku Day will also feature unforgettable moments of art, culture, and music. Admission to Turku City Museum sites will be free, with special programs at Kuralan Kylämäki and Turku Castle. Several art galleries, including the Critical Gallery and Iso Gallery at Turku Art Hall, will also open their doors with free admission.

Music will be heard across the city: at record store 8raita, local artist Elaine Alaïs will perform with her band. Later in the evening, Telmu ry will bring together local musicians at Restaurant Ship Donna. After the city’s fireworks display, the headline act will be Muscular, performing electronic funk pop. At the youth culture center Vimma, young audiences can enjoy a rich program, including performances by Turku Rock Academy bands.

This year’s Turku Day will also be a dream day for secondhand enthusiasts. Flea markets and yard sales will pop up across the city, including Vartsika’s family flea market, Kåren’s flea market, and Kutomo’s flea market. At Taiteen talo (House of Arts), visitors can explore several art exhibitions, the Antique Book Fair, and join the community Turku Day dinner.

New Experiences Alongside Traditions

The atmospheric Turku Market Hall will open on Sunday especially for Turku Day, with a festive atmosphere honoring Mexico’s Independence Day. At the Market Square, visitors can enjoy the lively Grand Fair, filled with stalls and community buzz. At the Old Great Square’s market event, local associations, clubs, and political parties will present their work, while the stage will host dance and music performances. There, the Turku Society’s Cultural Turku Citizen of the Year will also be announced and greeted by Mayor Piia Elo.

Each year, Turku Day introduces new experiences, and this time one of them will be the Kutomo Open, where visitors can explore yoga, flea markets, dance and performance art, sewing studios, and even tufting. Nearby in Linnanfältti, artist Mika Natri’s colorful nine-piece flower sculpture series Kukat will be unveiled in a public opening ceremony.

The festivities of this "Delightfully Moving Turku Day" will be crowned with a spectacular fire show at the Cathedral Square at 20:00, followed by the traditional fireworks at Samppalinna Hill at 21:00.
