80 years of Gabriela Mistral's Nobel Prize: Discover the activities to be held in Helsinki
With a keynote lecture, exhibitions, and arpilleras workshops on Gabriela Mistral, the Finland-Chile Solidarity Association (ASOFICH) will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Chilean poet's Nobel Prize.
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Gabriela Mistral, the Finland-Chile Solidarity Association (ASOFICH) is planning a series of cultural events in anticipation of this important commemoration in Helsinki, Finland.
In this regard, this upcoming September 3rd, there will be a presentation and dissemination of poems by Gabriela Mistral translated into Finnish, an event that is supported by the Embassy of Chile in Finland. This event will take place at the Ritarihuone in Helsinki.
From September 1st to 20th, 15X80, an exhibition featuring 15 illustrations about the poetess will take place, in honor of the 80th anniversary of her Nobel Prize. This is a visual display of the Chilean poet's legacy in regards to social justice and Latin American identity. The graphic art is developed by the designer and musician César Aguilar Alcedo, whereas the curatorship is carried out by Ángel Barrientos. The opening will be held this Saturday, August 30th at 5 pm. At Topeliuksenkatu 1, Helsinki.
Throughout the entire month of September, ASOFICH will host arpilleras workshop themed around Gabriela Mistral, consisting of four sessions to create a textile artwork with application and/or embroidery inspired by Mistral's poetry. Registration is free and you can do it through this link.
Meanwhile, on October 16th, the documentary film "Locas Mujeres" (2011) will be shown at Oulunkylän Seurahuone, about the poet made by the filmmaker María Elena Wood, which portrays the life of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga (Gabriela Mistral) and her relationship with Doris Dana.
Subsequently, a digital sample of the "Constelación Mistral" exhibition will be presented on October 23rd, accompanied by chamber music. The location will be confirmed in the coming days. Finally, on October 24th, a Master Lecture and Discussion on Gabriela Mistral will be held at the University of Helsinki.
"We want to highlight in Finland the sometimes unknown universal value of our poet Gabriela Mistral, as a woman, as a politician, as an analyst, and as a visionary of her time," said Luis Herrera, president of ASOFICH.
This series of events and activities, which will take place in Helsinki between September and October, aim to preserve and showcase the legacy of the national poet in Nordic lands.
