10 years later: How was Matt Murdock's return to the MCU in "Daredevil: born again" orchestrated?

In the new original series from Marvel Television, the iconic vigilante portrayed by Charlie Cox is forced to reconnect with his past identity and with his eternal enemy, Wilson Fisk. The first episodes are now available exclusively on Disney+.

With the first two episodes available on Disney+, the streets of New York are already witnessing the return of a prodigal son of the city: Matt Murdock. Daredevil: Born Again, the new series from Marvel Television, reunites fans with the iconic Big Apple vigilante portrayed by Charlie Cox, ten years after the premiere of the Daredevil series, whose three seasons are available on the streaming platform.

This new story finds the lawyer Matt Murdock fighting for justice through his thriving law firm, while former mafia boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) pursues his own political ambitions in New York. HOW THE IDEA CAME ABOUT: "WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF...?"

The return of Daredevil to the MCU started in the mind of showrunner and executive producer Dario Scardapane. For him, the starting point of the new story emerged organically. "The last time we saw them, Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page were reconciling and were about to open their new law firm. Our 'what if...' moment came from the idea of 'let's start from there'. By doing so, we were able to give context to the relationships and to the world, and then we turned everything upside down"|, he notes.

Over the course of these ten years, the character played by Cox has appeared in different Marvel stories, including a cameo in the movie Spider-Man, No Way Home and appearances in more recent Disney+ series like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo.

Now, the masked hero faces new challenges, honoring the path he's traveled and exploring new territory. Explains executive producer Sana Amanat: "I think the hardest part of this series was making sure it had some continuity and respected the broader narrative, so fans could reconnect with these characters with a sense of familiarity and excitement for what is going to happen to them. At the same time, the series welcomes new audiences and establishes a new stage and a different direction for both our Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk."

"We wanted to shake things up a bit, so even though there will be elements that seem familiar, Daredevil: Born Again has its own identity," highlights Amanat.

CALLING CHARLIE COX

For the actor Charlie Cox, the possibility of stepping into the shoes of Murdock again was impossible to resist. The actor recalls: "When everything was frozen during the pandemic, I received a call from the president of Marvel, Kevin Feige, who introduced me to the idea of coming back to make cameos both in Spider-Man, No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. He then told me there would be something else after, but they didn't know what it would be yet. I was speechless and absolutely thrilled. I think he said something like 'I just wanted to gauge your interest', and my response was resounding: 'very high, my interest is very high'".

For Cox, the journey Murdock takes in the new series allowed him to connect with the essence of the character. "What always interested me about my character is the relationship that Matt Murdock has with Daredevil and the relationship that Daredevil has with Matt Murdock. I believe that this dynamic is what makes Matt Murdock different from many other superheroes, because as a visually impaired lawyer, he deceives people more than he does when he is Daredevil."

"Daredevil is his true essence, when he can fully express himself and experience the world, whereas Matt Murdock uses a cane that he doesn't really need. He puts on a performance to convince the world that he is an ordinary lawyer. As a devout Catholic, the idea that his entire existence is a lie causes him a lot of guilt, shame, and distress; it is something that deeply overwhelms him. So, with all these dynamics and conflicts, exploring his relationship with himself is an incredibly rich and fascinating process," he concludes.

EXPANDING THE STORY

Throughout the nine episodes of the series, the first two are already available and the following ones will be released weekly on Disney+, the dynamics and conflicts involving Murdock and the rest of the characters will unfold before the eyes of the audiences.

Thus, his story will be enriched and expanded, inaugurating a new era in the life of the Marvel vigilante who still has a long way to go.
