New Year in Turku: Fireworks, children's events and safe celebrations

Turku is reminding New Year's Eve celebrants to celebrate safely.

Turku will continue its traditional fireworks to mark the turn of the year. The negative impacts of fireworks are being addressed through a campaign encouraging people to use common sense and wear protective goggles.

Campaign visible in the city centre

Turku is reminding New Year’s Eve celebrants to celebrate safely. The This Is Not Rocket Science campaign will be displayed on the city’s screens in the city centre and across the city’s social media channels.

The aim of the campaign is to promote responsible and safe use of fireworks.

FAMILY CELEBRATION

The city’s main New Year’s Eve fireworks display will take place as usual from Samppalinna Hill at midnight. The children’s New Year celebration will culminate in a fireworks display at Kupittaa Park at 6:00 PM.

Before that, children can take part in the traditional New Year’s Eve Children’s Wonderland of Physical Activity event starting at 3:00 PM. The event is free of charge.

Firework-related harm addressed through a council initiative

The city’s fireworks tradition was reviewed following a council initiative titled "Limits to Fireworks in Turku - The City of Turku must prevent firework-related harm." The city decided to continue the tradition while seeking ways to reduce the negative impacts of fireworks.

In addition to the city-organised displays, the initiative also highlighted the harm caused by fireworks set off by non-professionals. From the perspective of nature, the environment, and residents, the impact of fireworks spreads widely across the city and lasts for a considerable period of time. The city cannot directly intervene in fireworks set off by private individuals.

Turku will put its fireworks services out to tender next year. In this process, the city will also explore whether its own fireworks practices can be modified to reduce harm — for example, by lowering noise levels. The children’s fireworks display already uses quieter fireworks.

In the spring, the city will also assess whether there is a need to change the extent of the fireworks prohibition zone. Decisions regarding the prohibition area are made by the rescue authorities, and enforcement is overseen by the police.
