How to avoid "online theft": Tips and recommendations to have a secure password

Although passwords are not the only method of protection, they are the basic level in the process of validating access to systems and information, which every person and company must consider.

“123456”, “admin” and the different proper names of users, such as “Benjamin”, “Antonio” and “Santiago”, were some of the most used passwords by Chileans during 2023. This behavior, which was collected in a study carried out by Eset, reflects the lack of awareness regarding cybersecurity and personal data protection in our society.

In the World Password Day, established by cybersecurity experts in 2013 and held on First Thursday in May, the general manager of Cirion Technologies Chile, David Iabocucci, gives 6 tips To prevent the violation of passwords, emphasizing the importance of the password as a method of access control, preventing the entry of malicious sources, be they people or applications.

Likewise, the executive comments that, although “it is not the only method, we can assure that passwords are the basic level in the process of validating access to information systems. The harder it is to discover, the better it will serve as a protective mechanism,” Iacobucci adds.

Specifically, these six steps are a basis for raising the level of protection of our passwords and should be adopted by users and companies for this task:

  1. The most important thing to know is that passwords are private and should not be divulged or written in accessible places by people who should not have access to them.
  2. When setting up a password, avoid using data such as date of birth, or any other information that someone can easily obtain.
  3. Passwords should be long, with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and some special characters.
  4. It must be remembered by the designer, so that it is not easily forgotten.
  5. If people tend to have more than one password, it is advisable to use management tools such as Nordpass, RoboForm, Keeper, Dashlane, etc. in addition to those offered by traditional brands.
  6. Companies, on the other hand, must ensure that all employees are trained to manage their passwords securely and that they can avoid falling into fraud or social engineering.

Along with the above, Iacobucci clarifies that there is no exhaustive list of steps to take to protect yourself from attacks, but it is important to consider that passwords should be as secure as possible and difficult to crack. In addition, they should avoid saving them in browsers and other publicly accessible systems where they can be easily detected by third parties.

“Every organization must have an action plan and training to face the difficulties generated by issues related to cybersecurity. Therefore, the budget allocated to training and safety must represent the real interest of the organization in relation to this matter,” concludes the general manager of Cirion Technologies Chile.
