Application open for the Whale Caretaker training program
Known for working with plants and algae, the science and art collective Fern Orchestra invites everyone to dance for the future of the seas.
March 2026.- Fern Orchestra is preparing a new work, Whale Caretaker, a week-long multidisciplinary event taking place at the Old Great Square (Vanhalla Suurtorilla) from June 8-14, 2026. The week will culminate in a community dance performance titled Keijunta, for which performers are now being recruited.
Releasing eco-anxiety through dance
The choreography will be practiced under the guidance of professional dancers. Participants may include work teams, groups of friends, board game clubs, student rowing clubs, as well as individual participants. No prior experience or knowledge of Finnish is required, and the activity is open to people of all ages.
The dance piece embodies human participation in the protection of marine environments. "A Whale Caretaker is a person who, despite experiencing environmental grief, chooses to act for the benefit of marine nature. Participation helps release accumulated eco-anxiety through artistic expression," says initiator Vespa Laine.
See you at the square!
Whale Caretaker offers fresh research insights as well as opportunities to discuss the future of our seas. During the week, a three-dimensional textile sculpture called Keijusto will be crocheted from algae-based yarn at the square, and everyone is welcome to contribute. The community dance performance will take place among the textile installation.

Schedule for the Keijunta community dance performance
Performances (4 in total) will take place between June 11-13, including a dress rehearsal. Additional rehearsal times will be arranged with the choreographer.
